Afghan opium and heroin during US occupation

Riddle me this…
Before the US invaded Afghanistan, the Taliban had eradicated opium growing in that country.
While the U.S. occupied Afghanistan, it became the largest heroin producer in the world by far, much of it going straight to the United States.
Now that the U.S. is gone, opium growing there has reduced by 99%.
“U.S. government involvement in heroin in Afghanistan dwarfed the CIA’s involvement in Central American cocaine trading.”
Why did they do this?
Remember the dotcom crash and the subprime mortgage collapse, and the billions of dollars that disappeared from the economy?
Look at the overlap with the years of US occupation.
