US weapons on the Lusitania

On this day in 1915, the Lusitania was sunk in the Atlantic.
Why did the US get involved with WWI? It was largely based on an emotional response to 128 Americans dying on the Lusitania.
The reason it outraged so many people was that it was full of civilians and not thought to have contained any weapons.
The rules of war at the time were that ships containing weapons were fair game.
When the shipwreck was discovered later on, tons of US-made weapons were found on the ship.
