A lesson about Africa
Big, diverse, rich – and exploited
Fixing the map
Africa is a continent, not a country.
It’s the 2nd largest continent – bigger than China, India, Western Europe and the contiguous US combined.
It has 54 countries and between 1,500 and 2,000 languages are spoken.
Nigeria alone has over 520 languages.
So when you hear “Africa” and “Africans” lumping them all together is like calling Italians and Germans “Europeans” – or lumping Koreans and Thai people as “Asians.”
It’s technically true, but it leaves out a lot of essential detail and difference.
And there’s more…
The impact of arbitrary borders imposed on the continent is still with us today and is one of the things that’s holding the people there back.
